An interactive journalism piece on the end of net neutrality in America as part of my dissertation project for the Goldsmiths MSc Digital Journalism program.

The Project

In January of 2018, the online debate over the future of net neutrality regulations was well underway. I wanted to capture this important moment in time through an in-depth explanatory piece of journalism that captured the nuance of the debate through data visualisation and research.

The story was published during a debate about whether or not the "FCC will have oversight over access to the most important network of our lifetime".

Contribution

My piece, "The Network of a Lifetime", is a story about net neutrality changes in the U.S. and how these regulations affect the internet as consumers use it. I set out to create a story that included data analysis and visualization throughout the piece, with scrolling being the main user interaction. I performed all research, interviewing, and data anlysis myself. I also created the design of the web page and wrote the code to build it. Read the full story here.

The story was built using: Uikit, ScrollMagic, jQuery, HTML/CSS, d3.js, and Adobe Illustrator.

Maps show how internet providers have carved out exclusive serice areas, thus creating monopolies and controlling price rates.
